I knew someone was reading this blog. Now I'm the recalcitrant one, as it turns out.

Well, here's the deal: it sounds like Cooper is in big trouble. I've been an occasional member of a flurry of email conversations detailing the mess that seems to be piling up around Cooper Square these days. From the sound of things, it might be that tuition - and a general engineering degree, ironically - may be in the offing for the future of our much-maligned alma mater. My personal attitude toward these changes - and Kate's provocative post, consequently - is a negative one. I don't think that throwing out engineering majors is a viable solution to the school's problems. Tuition, I'll admit, is another story - I would rather see Cooper survive than not. But one must take these Band-Aid solutions with a grain of salt: considering how mis-management and poor decisions have gotten Cooper into the shape it's in, how can we trust the school's guiding administration to shepherd it through such drastic changes as these? No, my fellow survivors, I don't think we can allow them to chip away at old Pete's Foundation in this way.

But, that's just my $0.02.

never mind. So, maybe something simpler? But since you asked... here's a topic to discuss, if anyone reads this. Do you think that Engineering education would better serve students with a change to a 5-year program? What if you'd had an extra year to really delve into a project, to work one-on-one with a professor, full-time? Or do you think 4 years was plenty? Lately I've been thinking that the best solution would be to remove specialization from the undergrad curriculum, since it seems like nobody sticks hard and fast to their major anyway. Let everyone get a general engineering degree, try it out, and then come back and specialize in a Masters or PhD program, if they think it's necessary. I think most engineers could have done with a bit more business and/or humanities education. What do you think?

Okay. Seeing that band reminds me that I am one of oh-so-many -- a white, upper-middle suburban class hipster in Gap/H&M with a ear for the off-beat and an eye off-handedly on the egalitarian. The Satan Is My Motor chant still moves me, though this time we chanted the ooh-wa chorus of Short Skirt Long Jacket. The masses still love that Shut the Fuck Up song, and they still love to talk through all the songs they haven't memorized. Last time I thought I didn't enjoy Cake because seeing them came with an evening with the law students (Karen, of course, excluded from my disdain) and that weird tall guy Karen was dating at the time. But this time confirmed a sneaking suspicion -- I'm too old for this shit. The quote you mention is actually scrawled across the tile (permanent marker) in a remarkably well-composed hand , against the right-hand wall of the far stall in that said bathroom. I've come upon it many a time, but found it pales in comparison to the small, calm graffito etched into the mortar grout a few feet lower. Although I don't particularly agree, I must include it here. Enough already.

As the threat spirals ever nearer to me I get these absurd thoughts. Like, today I read that the Post Office is stockpiling gloves and masks for "front line" postal workers. And I think that it's pretty safe to say that the post office has never considered itself an organization with a front line. Neither snow, nor sleet, nor gloom of bioterror... Right. See? Then I read that they are considering irradiating mail for our protection. And I start to think about a cartoon villain, a postal worker who believed he had been exposed to Anthrax and so irradiates himself believing the process to be a preventative measure... he suddenly grows to Incredible Hulk proportions and sets about brutal vengeance. I know, it's a weak concept. Like, what is his motivation? Why does he have to be a bad guy? Well, it's just a concept, friends.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the crazy state of current affairs?

hello all.. just checking in.
there's not much goin' on here in Baltimore.. other than postal workers contracting anthrax, that is..
I busy working on another proposal.. this time for baggage (i.e. luggage) handling at airports - great timing, huh

Hey, 42.

Glad to see you finally checked e-mail.

I just invited Eric F to join. If you read my other weblog (here), or if you, like Eddie, just hear about it over pizza, you know that there's a pretty good chance that I'm about to pound out a 50,000 word novel. Maybe. Anyway, in preparation for this feat, I'm trying to wrangle a laptop computer for cheap. I don't need anything special -- just a functioning battery (that will still hold charge) and a harddrive. (As my friend Tony pointed out, a 26-letter keyboard would be nice too -- not to mention all those pesky punctuation keys...) So if you know anyone with a laptop rotting away in their basement, could you let me know? I've got about $150 I'd put toward this project, so if acquiring said laptop requires a little fiscal lubrication, as it were, then I can dip, just not too deeply. Sorry to be such a slowpoke. How is everyone doing?
I assume that you are all cheering for the Yankees tonight? I was part of a very small minority in Oakland/Berkeley that was supporting NY. Not too much is going on here in CA, which I guess is sometimes a good thing. I moved several months ago and absolutely love my new place. It is further from campus, but in a really nice area. When are any of you planning to hit the Left Coast? Keep in mind that there is always a floor/couch available if anyone is in the neighborhood. Take care.

Post transfers your entry into the lower part of the browser window, and you can take a sec to check how it looks there before hitting the orange Publish button. Under your entry, there should be the word "edit," which you can click on to reopen your entry in the top window if you want to make changes. Publish actually transfers your entry to the website. (Though, you can still edit, even after publishing. At least, I can. I'm not sure about non-Administrators. Is "edit" there for you, too?)
So, bottom line. After you write your entry, you can either hit Post, check your entry in the bottom half of the window, and then hit the orange Publish button to publish, or just use Post and Publish in the first place.
If entries are "posted" but not "published," they'll sit in the queue until someone publishes (anyone). I'm publishing for you guys now.
Also, yes, blogger has some quirks in various operating systems. I know on a Mac, the top bar is missing. But I'm still a fan, because on blogger, it seems, stuff like this is continually being worked out. Maybe this will be better...

Welcome to me97.blogspot.com. This will be a place for anyone remotely connected to the CU ME 97 class to touch base and connect in a simple and friendly way. I have been writing on a couple of other weblogs (a hard know to think and this much is true -- sorry about the self-plug!) for a couple of months now, and I've found it much more effective than trying to keep up with friends via individual e-mail messages.

As for me, I'm still in Central NJ, still working for the same medical device company. (Which brings up an interesting aside -- I've chosen not to actually associate myself with that company specifically on-line, for somewhat obvious reasons if you read my other weblog... I'll leave it up to you how much you'd like to reveal here; just remember that this is a public website and anyone could "happen" upon it.)

So, let us know what you're up to!
